'Keep the Wreath Red' Program Encourages
Residents to Focus on Holiday Fire Safety
The Barrington Fire Department and Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (BCFPD) are once again participating in a public awareness program where seasonal décor encourages residents to keep their families safe from fire this holiday season.
The centerpieces of the "Keep the Wreath Red" program are festive wreaths displayed outside each of the three fire stations (400 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington; 120 W. Algonquin Road, Barrington Hills; 22222 N. Pepper Road, Lake Barrington) that serve the Village of Barrington and surrounding communities that comprise the BCFPD.
Each wreath begins the season fully illuminated with red bulbs. Firefighters will replace a red bulb with a white bulb for each fire that is caused by holiday decorations.
No such fires have occurred in Barrington or the District for the past six years, Fire Chief James Arie reports.
Fire District officials offer a series of holiday safety tips that are designed to help residents "Keep the Wreath Red" for yet another year.
The "Keep the Wreath Red" program is a visual reminder to residents that the season offers no holiday from fire-related accidents. The Illinois Fire Chief Association adopted the program in 1980 as way to alert communities of fires caused by holiday decorations. The Fire Department and Fire District began participating in the program in 2008.
