Fire Safety Tips for a Happy Holiday Season
Make "the most wonderful time of the year" a safe one for you and your family.
According to data compiled by the American Red Cross, U.S. Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 47,000 fires occur during the winter holidays. These result in more than 500 deaths, 2,200 injuries, and cause more than $554 million in property damage.
To help District residents remain safe and snug in their homes during this most festive season, BCFPD trustees and the Fire Department offer the following safety tips:
Holiday Entertaining
- Test smoke detectors and inform guests of your home fire escape plan.
- Keep children and pets away from lit candles.
- Ask smokers to step outside, and be sure to wet cigarette butts with water before discarding.
- After guests leave, designate one person to walk around your home to ensure that all candles/smoking materials are properly extinguished.
Cooking
- Remain in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.
- Wear short or tightly-rolled sleeves when cooking. Loose-fitting items can catch fire if they touch a gas flame or electric burner.
- Use turkey fryers outdoors and away from buildings or combustible materials. Never leave the fryer unattended.
Holiday Decorating
- Buy and use lights approved by UL (Underwriters Laboratories).
- Replace any lights that have frayed or worn cords, broken or cracked sockets, loose connections, bare wires, or operate intermittently.
- Never use indoor lights outdoors.
- Do not overload electrical outlets.
- Do not run extension cords under carpets, across doorways, or near heaters.
- Unplug lights when leaving home and before going to bed.
Christmas Trees
- Select only fresh trees that are deep green in color and have a strong scent of pine. Trees should not lose their needles easily.
- Keep tree stands filled with water.
- Verify that artificial trees are flame retardant, and keep all trees away from fireplaces or heating vents.
Candles
- Never leave burning candles unattended.
- Keep candles away from combustibles such as clothing, books, curtains and flammable liquids.
- Use candleholders that are sturdy, won't tip over easily, are made from a material that cannot burn, and are large enough to collect dripping wax.
