The event lets fire service professionals communicate directly with members of Congress, and keep them updated on legislative issues affecting fire departments across the country.

Chief Kreher and Trustee Hanson spent a busy few days meeting with Illinois Senators Richard Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, and Congressmen Daniel Lipinski (D-3rd), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-8th), Brad Schneider (D-10th), Mike Bost (R-12th), and John Shimkus (R-15th).

Topics discussed with Congressional leaders and delegations included the importance of:

  • Maintaining federal support for grants that help local departments fund training programs and purchase new equipment.
  • Protecting patient access to emergency care by allowing EMS personnel to quickly administer life-saving medications on “standing orders” (without doctor approval).
  • Amending the Fire Sprinkler Incentive Act to expand tax incentives for installing fire sprinkler systems.Duckworth Office pic
  • Creating a national cancer registry for firefighters, who experience a 30-40% greater risk of diagnosis.
